Description:

East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A hand-built pottery wedding bed model of sizable form that was likely part of a larger figural model scene. The wedding bed features an interior plinth - usually covered with a pad or blankets in a real example - that the bride and groom would lay upon to consummate their marriage. This model exhibits auspicious symbols as well as perforated screens flanking the doorway, and the entire composition is adorned in Sancai glaze in hues of green, yellow, and orange. Wedding beds in ancient China symbolized the beginning of a marriage, represented fertility and prosperity, had protective and cultural significance, and were deeply rooted in the social fabric of the time. They were not just functional pieces of furniture but held immense cultural and symbolic value in the context of Chinese weddings and family life. Size: 8.4" L x 14.25" W x 15.9" H (21.3 cm x 36.2 cm x 40.4 cm)
