Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Campania, ca. 4th century BCE. A lovely wheel-thrown pottery krater amphora with a tapered discoid foot, a large bell-shaped body, a funnel mouth surrounded by a flared rim, a deep basin, and a pair of upturned horizontal handles which are a style innovation from earlier examples which had lug-form handles. All exterior surfaces of the vessel - save for the recessed area beneath the foot - are enveloped with lustrous black glaze which has developed faint rainbow-hued iridescence in scattered areas. Size: 6.375" W x 6.25" H (16.2 cm x 15.9 cm).

Published in: "Art of Antiquity." Galerie Gunter Puhze, 1978, vol. 1, no. 169.
