Central America, Guatemala, ca. early 20th century. A fine hand-carved and hand-painted wooden dance mask, perhaps representing a character from the Dance of the Conquest - although we think this mask is perfect for Guy Fawkes Day! The dramatic visage consists of an oversized triangular nose, furrowed brows, a notched mouth, and the facial hair is delineated in black pigments which contrasts against the ashy white skin. The eyes are pierced for the wearer to see through, and the raised sockets are surrounded by eyelashes. Masks, such as this one, were often made and worn during festivals and parades. Size: 5.75" W x 8.2" H (14.6 cm x 20.8 cm); 10.25" H (26 cm) on included custom stand.
