Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Proto-Nazca, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A very early textile fragment created by an artisan who preceded/anticipated the Nazca - depicting a warrior, proudly standing in composite profile and gripping intimidating weapons in both hands - the barbed weapon in his right hand is particularly threatening. All is comprised of an attractive combination of teal blue, golden yellow, chocolate brown, and magenta camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers. Sewn to a black fabric border for display. Size: 7.75" L x 7.25" W (19.7 cm x 18.4 cm); 19.5" L x 19" W (49.5 cm x 48.3 cm) with fabric backing

The details and style of this textile are amazing. Note the angularity of the figure's limbs and his expressive visage with that enormous eye, those parted lips revealing gnashing teeth, and that long, bulbous nose - and let's not overlook his flashy regalia - that elaborately adorned chest plate and magnificent crown! Simply fabulous!
