Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Proto Nazca, ca. 500 BCE. Finely woven from camelid (alpaca or llama) fibers, a grand turbante (turban in Spanish), of a long rectangular form, featuring row after row of stylized swastikas in a vibrant color palette of red, green, orange, black, and brown hues. The swastika was a symbol of good luck to many cultures prior to its usage by Hitler and the Nazis in the 1930's. A lovely ancient Peruvian textile, mounted atop museum-quality display fabric. Size: turban measures 69" L x 11.75" W (175.3 cm x 29.8 cm); 82" L x 27" W (208.3 cm x 68.6 cm) including black fabric mount

Sizable textile examples such as this can only survive due to the absolutely dry conditions found in the southern regions of Peru. In regions of Southern Peru and the surrounding areas, rainfall has never been recorded since the Spanish first ventured here in the early 16th century.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected in the 1950s to 1960s
