Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, proto Nazca culture, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A delightful section of mantle fringe - called muneca from the Spanish for doll. Woven from camelid fiber, this piece has four stylized and conjoined figures in cream, green, red, gold, blue, teal, brown, and black hues. The faces display lively, bold expressions while the hair strands flail wildly about. Textiles like this would have been used in the Nazca culture as ritual attire during ceremonial practices and ultimately funerary contexts. Mounted on a fabric-lined cardboard backing. Size: 4.25" L x 3.9" W (10.8 cm x 9.9 cm).

Provenance: private Slavin collection, acquired in Peru and Bolivia between 1971 and 1972
