Description:

Pre-Columbian, south coast Peru, Proto-Nazca culture, ca. 500 to 100 BCE. A hand-built pottery trumpet of a conical form bearing an intriguing and finely preserved face on the obverse. The prominent visage is centered with a protruding triangular nose and has black ovoid eyes, concentric red, white, and maroon feathers topping his headdress, and a set of broad whiskers emanating from his cheeks. Sets of spiny cacti line the periphery of some feathers along the verso and add a vegetal element to this countenance. The minimalist design of the trumpet emits a powerful sound when played. Size: 4.1" W x 11.125" H (10.4 cm x 28.3 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from the 1950s to the 1960s
