Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Proto-Nazca, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A gorgeous textile sash comprised of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in vivid hues of pink, golden-yellow, coffee, cobalt-blue, maroon, and crimson. The ends of the sash are formed from solid brown panels with polychrome checkers just on the inside, and the main body boasts dozens of abstract geometric forms - each with either two or five spiraling tendrils - in dark hues against yellow or pink ground. A fabulous and attractive example of early Nazca clothing! Mounted on a dark-green, museum-quality fabric. Size (textile): 48.2" L x 7.125" W (122.4 cm x 18.1 cm); size (fabric): 63" L x 28" W (160 cm x 71.1 cm).

  • Condition: Modern brown and pink fabric panels are sewn behind areas of the sash for stabilization of aged fibers. Losses and fraying to some interior and peripheral threads, with areas of light staining, and minor creasing. Original coloration and iconography is still visible and clear.
