Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Proto Nazca, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A wonderful textile panel of a sizable form composed of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of red, orange, yellow, white, and brown atop a teal ground. The panel features dozens of highly abstract zoomorphic creatures with sinuous bodies and curled arms. Large textiles like this example are able to survive throughout the centuries due to the extremely dry conditions found in Southern Peru. These regions rarely receive rainfall, and such meteorological incidents have not been recorded since the Spanish first ventured there in the early 16th century CE. Mounted atop black display fabric. Size (textile): 16.25" W x 43.25" H (41.3 cm x 109.9 cm); size (display fabric): 32" W x 58" H (81.3 cm x 147.3 cm).

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany
