Description:

Native American, Southern United States, probably Arkansas, Mississippian culture, ca. 1140 to 1420 CE. A fabulous pottery effigy vessel featuring a hemispherical bowl with a bird's head rising from one end and a tab-shaped tail extending from the other. The bird's long neck culminated in a flat head with a tapered beak and liberal remains of a crest. This is likely a species of wood-duck; the male's have striking plumage and crests. Effigy vessels such as this piece were probably used for offerings. Ducks and other waterfowl were abundant during fall migrations, and a welcomed food source for Mississippians. Ducks were also considered supernatural beings that could pass through cosmic realms: flying above and diving underwater. A handsome example! Size: 11.3" L x 8.4" W x 6.8" H (28.7 cm x 21.3 cm x 17.3 cm)
