Description:

Native American, Southeast or Midwest, Mississippian, ca. 1200 CE. A fascinating hand-built pottery bowl with an avian head protruding from the front. The bowl has a rounded profile, with incised swirling motifs on the exterior below the rim. A tab/tail protrudes from the rim, opposite from the bird's head. The head has bulging eyes and a ridged crest down the center above the flat bill. This is likely a species of duck, and waterfowl were plentiful as well as a reliable food source, especially during autumn migrations. Ducks were supernatural and symbolic beings that could move across realms; in the air, on the ground, and diving underwater. This avian effigy bowl may have been used to hold offerings. Size: 9.375" W x 5.5" H (23.8 cm x 14 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.
