Description:

Native American, North America, northern Arizona, north of Flagstaff, ca. 1275-1400 CE. Jeddito Black-on-Yellow was among a long line of Hopi yellow wares made from clay that ranges from yellow to orange. This bowl was constructed via the coil-and-scrape technique, painted with manganese-based on bright red slip, and fired in an oxidizing atmosphere until it attained its yellow hue. An intricate painted decorative program comprised of three main triangular panels filled with varying geometric motifs and arranged in a pinwheel composition adds infinite aesthetic interest to the piece. What's more, this piece has an intentional spirit break inside the rim. Hopi oral history indicates that when groups were leaving a village, they would purposely break all of the pottery they could not take with them, leaving evidence of who once lived there. ~ 3-3/4"H x 8-1/2"D at widest point  Provenance: Ex- Hagan Collection.
