Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Central and Southern Arizona, Hohokam culture, ca. 950 to 1150 CE. A squat and wide pitcher of relatively spherical form that was hand-built via the meticulous coil-and-scrape technique. The exterior surfaces are covered in intricate linear motifs in dark red-brown pigment that cease only along the base and handle. Hohokam pottery was similar to the pottery produced in the plains only the clays tended to be of finer quality and were tempered with caliche and finely ground micaceous schist and vegetative material.   • Condition: Professionally repaired, with restoration along handle and rim, and with resurfacing and light overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and fading to original pigment, with nicks and pitting, otherwise in nice condition. Good preservation to original motif. Previous inventory number handwritten on base.
