Description:

Native American, Midwestern to Southern United States, Eastern Woodland, ca. 500 to 1500 CE. A trio of interesting stone objects, each shaped with a discoid profile with shallow indentations in the center of both sides. The largest is made from a mottled brown stone, and the other two are a creamy beige hue, possibly quartzite stones. The indentations are less pronounced on the thicker beige stone, and the smallest stone has a slightly carinated body. Similar shaped stone objects have been found across eastern North America, and their purpose is widely speculated. It is thought these discoidal stones served as pieces for a throwing game known as chungkey or chunkey. Size of largest: 2.5" W x 1" H (6.4 cm x 2.5 cm)

Provenance: private Kansas City, Missouri, USA collection, ex-John Townsend collection, formed in the 1970s and earlier
