Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, near Walnut Canyon, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), Kayenta Tradition, Walnut Canyon type, ca. 1200 CE. A wonderful pottery pitcher of the Walnut Canyon type - a member of the Kayenta tradition emanating from an area near Flagstaff, Arizona - elaborately hand-painted with bands of spiral and linear motifs around the tapering neck and nested zigzag and maze designs on the bulbous body. Sitting upon a round yet stable base, the black-on-white vessel additionally features an arch handle that connects the gently-flared rim to the broad shoulder. Walnut Canyon type is often seen in bowls and ollas, but rarely in the form of a pitcher like this example. Size: 5.9" W x 5.4" H (15 cm x 13.7 cm)
