Description:

Southwestern USA, east central Arizona/west southern New Mexico, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), St. John's Polychrome type, ca. 1175 to 1300 CE. A beautiful bowl with bright colors that pop, created by Anasazi artisans of St. Johns - the first Anasazi potters to make polychrome pottery during the prehistoric period. Prior to this, pottery was either black-on-white or black-on-red. Here, we see black-on-white interior, but added white on red to the exterior walls - making for a polychrome designation. The interior presents an elaborate decorative program of nested geometric and steppe motifs interlocking to surround a bare white central tondo. Alternatively, the exterior exhibits a peaked pattern that falls just below the rim. Size: 7.9" Diameter x 3.5" H (20.1 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection, purchased in 2022; ex-George Hassan collection, Durango, Colorado, USA
