Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, near Walnut Canyon, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), Greater Salado, Upper Gila, ca. 1300 to 1450 CE. A beautiful pottery bowl that was constructed via the traditional Anasazi coil-and-scrape method. The vessel presents with a round but stable base, gently carinated walls, and a thick rim surrounding the deep basin. The exterior of the bowl is decorated with a solid russet-hued base that is topped with intricate linear motifs in black atop a cream ground. Within the basin are additional, larger linear and stepped motifs that create a wondrous presentation. Size: 7.7" Diameter x 3.875" H (19.6 cm x 9.8 cm)

Provenance: Whisnant Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA acquired prior to 2000; ex-private collection, collected in the early 1960s near Walnut Canyon, Arizona, USA

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple pieces as shown, with restoration to a few small areas around base, and adhesive residue and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and chips to rim, walls, and base, with fading to areas of original pigment and touch-up painting to others and pitting and small spalls in scattered areas. Nice preservation to original motifs throughout.
