Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Mogollon Rim, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), Puerco type, ca. 1000 to 1150 CE. An attractive pottery bowl formed via the coil-and scrape technique and hand-painted with Puerco black-on-white decoration. Enveloped in a white slip, the interior of the vessel features a thick band of alternating spiral motifs and vertical striations. Size: 8.7" L x 8" W x 3.3" H (22.1 cm x 20.3 cm x 8.4 cm)
According to the New Mexico Office of Archaeological Studies, "Puerco Black-on-white was defined by Gladwin (1931). This type appears to have developed out of Red Mesa Black-on-white but exhibits greater use of bold solids that are often divided by thin parallel lines. This type is difficult to define and in many cases it is advisable to include ceramics exhibiting solid designs into a single group. Still, the effect is quite distinct and may be useful at times in monitoring this distinct style. This type seems to date from eleventh to early twelfth century."
