Description:

Native American, southwestern United States, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), ca. 1075 to 1250 CE. A beautiful hand-built pottery bowl of a sizable form with a flat base, curved walls with a thick rim, and a deep basin. The white-slipped surfaces provide a soft ground atop which dense black-painted decorations are presented, including four large crosshatch-filled circles, drooping stripes of solid and fretted styles, and repeating stippling along the top of the rim. The center of the basin is undecorated and retains its original white color. A masterclass example of fine Anasazi black-on-white artistry! Size: 8.6" W x 3.75" H (21.8 cm x 9.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-Joan Shaw collection, bought in 1971; loaned to the Mesa Verde Museum, 1962-1970; ex-Bill Mitchell collection, Cortez, Colorado, USA, from 1958-1962
