Description:

Native American, Southwestern US, New Mexico, Mimbres Valley, ca. 950 to 1150 CE. A classic bowl from an imaginative and unique ceramic tradition. The bowl has a dramatic composition of abstract geometric motifs delineated in black-on-white and adorning its interior. The design features a centerpiece comprised of a square housing striated sections moving in four directions resembling a weave motif with stylized wing-like or forms radiating from each side. Marking the center is a "kill" hole, which researchers believe means that the bowl was ritually punctured at its nadir prior to interment with a human burial. Adding to the decorative program and encircling the interior walls is a series of three thick bands followed by a series of nine slender bands, all in bichrome palette of black-on-white as well. A very beautiful example! Size: 9.2" diameter x 4.75" H (23.4 cm x 12.1 cm)

Provenance: private Arlington, Virginia, USA collection, acquired 2019 from an estate in Washington DC, USA
