Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Kayenta, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), ca. 1000 to 1200 CE. A large pottery bowl of hemispherical form shaped via the traditional coil-and-scrape technique. The round-bottomed vessel features tall walls, a laterally arching handle on one side, and a gray-white ground color. Within the basin is a dense decorative program of solid black bands and parallel zigzagging stripes, and a square-shaped panel in the center is undecorated. Three pairs of drilled holes across the body are indicative of ancient or native repairs from when the vessel was originally broken. Size: 10.25" L x 9.5" W x 5" H (26 cm x 24.1 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection, purchased November 11, 2016 from Gilbert Cooper; ex-William Platt and Gilbert Cooper collections

Abrasions and fading to pigment, with 3 pairs of drilled holes on body indicative of ancient/native repairs, and areas of fire-darkening across exterior surfaces. Great preservation to decorative motifs within basin. Old inventory label as well as old handwritten inventory number beneath base.
