Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, probably Four Corners region, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), ca. 1000 to 1300 CE. A hemispherical bowl formed via the traditional coil-and-scrape technique with a round but stable base and tall walls that surround the deep basin. Decorating the basin of this gray-white vessel are swaths of black pigment that form outlined pairs of diagonal bands, a pair of serrated spirals, and a central ovoid panel left intentionally undecorated. The radiating spirals perhaps have solar or vegetal connotations, and the large bands to the sides perhaps contain sky, cloud, or storm symbolism. Size: 6.2" W x 2.8" H (15.7 cm x 7.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-John B. Kendrick II collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired 1965 to 1990; John B. Kendrick II was that son of John B. Kendrick, Wyoming governor and US senator
