Description:

**Originally Listed At $500**

Native American, Southwestern US, Anasazi (Ancient Puebloan) culture, Pueblo I/Pueblo II period, ca. 850 to 1150 CE. A pretty example of a corrugated bowl with black-on-white ornamentation on the interior, in a style known as Red Mesa. Thick black horizontal bands wind around the interior of the bowl, ending with a blank white tondo demarcated from the sides by black tick marks descending from the lowest black band. Corrugation was a popular technique for many centuries; although it was more time consuming to construct, experimental archaeology has shown that it helped control temperature during cooking and made the vessel bodies stronger and therefore longer lasting. Size: 7.75" W x 3.8" H (19.7 cm x 9.7 cm)

On loan to the Mesa Verde Museum from 1962 to 1970.

Provenance: ex-Joan Shaw collection, bought in 1971; loaned to the Mesa Verde Museum, 1962-1970; ex-Bill Mitchell collection, Cortez, Colorado, USA, from 1958-1962
