Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Anasazi (Ancient Puebloan) culture, late Pueblo II to Pueblo III, ca. 1100 to 1300 CE. A wonderful example of Anasazi pottery, an unusual askos form with black-on-white elaborate geometric motifs across the ring-shaped body, spout, and handle. These designs may be abstract versions of landscape elements and celestial stars, as numerous art historians and archaeologists have proposed that Anasazi iconography related to the natural world they observed in the dramatic landscape of their homeland. Size: 3.875" W x 2.625" H (9.8 cm x 6.7 cm)

Anasazi pottery is most often found in the San Juan region of Colorado and Utah, although some traveled south into New Mexico and Arizona via trade. These pieces are frequently found in burials, but also in kivas and domestic contexts, and they seem to have been used both ritually and in the home.
