Description:

Native American, Southern Colorado Plateau, Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi), ca. 1075 to 1250 CE. A beautiful, hand-built pottery ladle with a thick handle and a wide scoop with a thin rim. The interior of the scoop is decorated with square motifs filled with dense linear bands in faded black pigment atop the smooth, white ground. Made for stirring and serving food, this was probably ultimately deposited with a deceased member of the community or left in an abandoned domestic space. Size: 8.2" L x 5.75" W (20.8 cm x 14.6 cm).

Provenance: ex-Joan Shaw collection, bought in 1971; loaned to the Mesa Verde Museum, 1962-1970; ex-Bill Mitchell collection, Cortez, Colorado, USA, acquired from 1958 to 1962

  • Condition: Repair to area of scoop rim, with small losses and light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor abrasions to scoop and handle, with fading to original pigmentation, and minor pitting along bottom of scoop. Light earthen deposits throughout.
