Description:

Native American, Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi), Kayenta Heartland / Flagstaff, Arizona region, ca. 900 to 1140 CE. An incredibly preserved Black Mesa black-on-white vessel of the style found in northeastern Arizona. It features a globular body with a rounded base perfect for pressing into the soil, a sloping neck, and an unpronounced rim around a wide, circular mouth. A thick handle attaches at the neck and shoulder, divided vertically down its center by a deep incised line. The exterior is painted a glossy white with repeated, geometric motifs in carbon-based black pigment around its neck and body. These motifs resemble the dramatic southwestern landscape. The large, solid triangles painted around the neck are a particularly common motif found with this style. Size: 6.4" W x 7" H (16.3 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection; ex-Mark Brady collection, found at Witches Wells Ranch, Sanders, Arizona, USA
