Native American, Southwestern United States, Northern Arizona, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), Bidahochi, ca. 1325 to 1400 CE. A lovely bowl built via the traditional coil-and-scrape technique with a round but stable base, tall walls, and a thick rim that slightly overhangs the deep basin; a pair of drilled suspension holes are situated along the rim. Decorating the basin of this gray-white composition is ample black pigment that forms triangular quadrants, each filled with linear, zigzagging, stippled, and lightning bolt motifs, all beneath a solid black band encircling the upper basin. Bidahochi black-on-white is a transitional pottery type that is very similar to Jeddito black-on-yellow ware except that it was fired in a neutral atmosphere rather than an oxidizing one. - Condition: Professionally repaired and restored, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Light abrasions and fading to original pigment, with small nicks to rim and exterior surfaces. Nice preservation to decorative motifs. Old inventory labels beneath base.
