Description:

Northern Europe, Scandinavia, pre-Viking period (often called Migration period or Germanic Iron Age), ca. 6th century CE. A gorgeous and rare bracteate pendant, made from an alloy of silver and approximately 25% gold, with a 20 karat gilded face. The surface has been stamped into a dramatic cross-shaped motif of dots and triangles. Spaces within the larger circles reveal that the piece probably once had inlaid jewels, probably garnets based on similar examples from the time period. The top has a folded-over loop that has as silver ring through it. A modern cord is through this, making the piece wearable as a necklace. Size of pendant: 1.8" W x 1.95" H (4.6 cm x 5 cm); modern cord is 27" L (68.6 cm); 23.1 grams
