Description:

Native American, North America, Pacific Northwest Coast, Alaska, Inuit, Punuk stage, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. This is a spear or harpoon head carved from a walrus tusk into a long blade with a double barbed end and a perforation for a cord. The tip is broad, almost spade like with a flat underside and rounded upper face. The indigenous people of the arctic relied on animals for nearly all aspects of existence and their skillfully made tools ensured successful hunts and the retrieval and reuse of their tools. Spear and harpoon heads often had strong cords attached to the points so the heads could detach when they hit the target, the barbs securing them into the animal's flesh so they could be hauled back into shore or the boat. Size: 5.125" L x 0.75" W (13 cm x 1.9 cm)
