Description:

North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, Kula, ca. 16th to 18th century CE. A pair of hand-carved stone projectiles known as "ma'a," for hurling from a hand-wielded sling. Both stones exhibit an ovoid form, one with a slightly tapered tip that is very egg-like in appearance. Both are a volcanic and highly porous rock material; the lightweight nature of the stones means they could have been flung further distances with less effort and would have been invaluable to native Hawaiian warriors. Size: 2.75" L x 1.75" W (7 cm x 4.4 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, before 2010
