Description:

North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, Pre-Contact Period, ca. 16th to 18th century CE. A pair of hand-pecked volcanic stones, shaped into thick, discoidal shapes - one used as a fishing sinker and the other for a game known as 'ulu maika. The larger is drilled through the center for securing on a fishing line or net to as a weight. The other stone is solid with rounded faces like a puck for rolling. The 'ulu maika game was one of the most popular forms of entertainment in Hawaii and was played on a course known as a kahuamaika. The objective was to roll the stones as close as possible to a pair of wooden stakes, the most points were awarded to stones landing between the two stakes. Size (stone sinker): 4.5" L x 1.5" W (11.4 cm x 3.8 cm)

  • Condition: Active flaking to stone sinker, losses and abrasions as shown. Light mineral deposits in recessed areas. 'Ulu maika stone is intact and very good. Old inventory numbers on the surfaces of both.
