Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexican, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. One of the beautiful animal forms of West Mexican shaft tomb pottery, a turtle with a bulbous shell, painted red, and simple legs and face. Archaeological sites along the coast of West Mexico show us extensive evidence for the hunting of nesting grounds for sea turtles, who were valuable sources of meat, eggs, oil, shell, and skin. These figures were placed inside of tombs and may have been a stand-in for the provisions needed in the afterlife - we know of many examples of food-giving animals remade in pottery from there. Size: 4.5" L x 3.75" W x 2" H (11.4 cm x 9.5 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Peter Arnovick collection, San fran, CA
