Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Pre-Classic, ca. 500 BCE. Carved from a grey volcanic stone, a head presenting hallmark Olmecoid facial features such as jowly cheeks, a downturned jaguar mouth, and slanted eyes. Also characteristic of Olmecoid pieces, the head is elongated and somewhat misshapen. The Olmec traditionally wore tight-fitting helmets, and scholars believe that the resulting artificial cranial deformation was a sign of elite status. A special example from the ancients of the Americas that found its way into the collection of Lupita Tovar, a legendary silent film actress of the early 20th century. Size: 5.5" W x 7.125" H (14 cm x 18.1 cm); 9.25" H (23.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-private collection of Lupita Tovar, silent screen actress of the 1930's, Bel-Air, California, USA
