Description:

Pre-Columbian, Veracruz, Mexico, ca. 600-900 CE. During the Late Classical period of Mesoamerica, artisans created a great variety of aerophones. The primary decorative element of many duct flutes is a modeled human figure. These can present a wide range of expression from near portraiture to dramatic naturalism as seen in this example to strict minimalism of the figure. This particular duct flute can produce a wide variety of tones and sounds of different timbres particularly because it is one of the earliest examples of a slide flute. A ceramic ball within the chamber may be slid from one end to the other as the player changes position. This in combination with the varying force of wind entering the mouthpiece and the positioning of the player's fingers makes for a wide range of sound! 8-1/4"L
