Description:

Pre-Columbian, Panamanian or Costa Rican, probable Diquis period, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. This is red- and black-slipped pottery bowl with three legs in the shape of seated monkeys with their hands at their sides. The interior of the bowl is also painted. There is little known about the Diquis culture but this was probably an object that would have been entombed with a body. The bowl may have at one time been a rattle or some other musical instrument based on the deliberate holes placed in the legs. Size: 3-1/2" in diameter x 2-1/4" H (9 cm x 6 cm).
