A striking necklace comprised of a trio of translucent, hand-cut, biconically drilled, polished quartz crystal beads (a large lozenge shaped pendant and two smaller teardrop shaped crystal beads) strung with countless spondylus shell (also known as spiny/thorny oyster) beads of brilliant plum and blush hues. Indeed, the treasured Spondylus compliments the luxurious native crystal perfectly! Size: necklace measures 23.5" L (59.7 cm); central pendant measures 1.5" L (3.8 cm)

Spondylus, commonly known as the spiny or thorny oyster, was highly prized by the ancient Peruvians and of great importance in their ritual and economic life. Found off the coast of Ecuador, the Spondylus was particularly cherished by Andean peoples. The indigenous combed the Pacific in their quest for the so-called “spiny oyster” prized for the blush hue of its interior. Spondylus shells symbolized fertility and power and played a major role during religious ceremonies oftentimes serving as an offering to Pachamama, the earth mother figure who served as a version of Mother Nature, as well as a form of currency.
