Starts at $100 - A Pre-Columbian plate from ancient West Mexico, circa 300 B.C. - 200 A.D. This vessel is in the form of a shallow bowl, that steps down at the bottom for a deeper interior. This piece may also have doubled as a lid to a larger vessel. A rare and unusual feature on this example is that it features a series of glyph-like symbols arranged in grouped alternating patterns. Such a representation is very rare on vessels from West Mexico, and may have been an attempt at a symbolic, written language of some kind. The brownish color and firing clouding of the vessel are consistent with a variety of well-known Colima wares, and also with much earlier Chupicuaro material from the broader region. This piece is believed to have most likely come from the ancient Colima region of West Mexico, since most of the material of the vast collection from which this came was collected by Lynn Langdon from that region himself, pre-1970. This piece is unmistakably ancient and authentic, based on the mineral deposits and wear, and makes for a fascinating study piece worthy of further research.
