Description:

Pre-Columbian, Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico, probably Zapotec from Monte Alban, ca. 200 BCE to 800 CE. This is a fierce, snarling jaguar head and upper body that has been broken off of something, possibly a spout for a pot. It is unclear when this break would have happened; Zapotec urns, for example, are sometimes found in situ broken as if that was a ritual component of the mourning process. The jaguar looks Zapotec in style because of its broad ears and facial expression. Small figures in Zapotec society like this one were placed in tombs or buried in ceremonial centers. Size: 3" x 2" x 2-1/2".
