Starts at $375 A Pre-Columbian seated figure from the ancient region of Nayarit, West Mexico, circa 200 B.C. - 300 A.D. This example measures approximately 8 1/4" tall and depicts a seated male. He is holding an object to his mouth, which is interpreted by most scholars to represent the act of smoking tobacco or some other substance, perhaps through a smoking tube. It has been speculated that such depictions may represent shamans in the act of smoking substances in an effort to induce an altered state of consciousness for shamanic activity. This is supported by the fact that the puffy, squinting eyes suggest a substance is taking effect, or that the individual is engaged in trance, "seeing" into the unseen realm. Others speculate that such activity may have been for the shamanic purpose of making "clouds" (symbolically) in efforts to produce rain in periods of drought, as supported by ethnographic data gathered from later inhabitants of the general region. - Condition: Intact with no restoration and only a minor repair where a large shard has been reglued on the figure's left side of their head. This was re-glued along a very clean, fine breakline, which does not detract at all. Otherwise, expected weathering, wear, chips and abrasions overall. Manganese and other mineral deposits remain as evidence of burial for millennia.
