Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche V, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A wonderful blackware effigy stirrup vessel representing a frog in a somewhat transitional style, the frog showing Moche stylings, the stirrup and spout form of the style used at the end of the Moche dynasty. The ancients of the Andes represented virtually all aspects of their environs and daily life in their pottery. The frog or 'rana' (in Spanish) was a very symbolic animal of the Pre-Columbian world, signifying water and rain and all the sustenance that it provides, and by extension, fertility. This adorable amphibian is delineated with remarkable detail - those bulging eyes, that ripply throat looking as if he is about to croak, and the intricate contours of its body with a stalk of corn on one side and objects under the throat and on the opposite side. A lively example in a stunning, lustrous blackware finish. Size: 7" L x 8" H (17.8 cm x 20.3 cm)
