Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mixtec, of Oaxaca, Guerrero, or Puebla Post Classic, ca. 1200 - 1520 CE. The Mixtecos created small sculptures called penates to represent family ancestors. According to scholar Michael Lind who wrote "Arqueologia de la Mixteca" (2008), penates were associated with the houses of nobles. Some were worn as pendants on necklaces as a symbol of the person's royal lineage. This piece was a pendant as is evident by a perforation in the back. It is significantly more finely carved - on both front and back - than your typical penate. Just imagine the skill and technique it took to delineate such details! 3-3/4"H x 1-3/4"W x 1-1/2"D Provenance: Ex-private Santa Monica, CA Collection.
