Description:

Mexico, Nayarit, Proto-Classic, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This earthenware maquette depicts a miniature house with a group of people inside of it. The ground floor includes two 'rooms' that were used to store maize and other staples. There is also an open dwelling section on the second floor where people are sheltered only by an overhang. We see six figures engaged in a feast of sorts under the awning, another figure heading up the stairs, and a lone figure huddling by the support. An ensemble of animals including a cat, a pig, and some chickens are roaming around the grounds. The complex with its multiple floors, variations in height, and black geometric and wavy painting is quite informative about the architecture of houses in West Mexico. This model was most likely an offering in a shaft tomb. 6-1/2"W x 4-1/2"D x 5-3/4"H Provenance: Ex-Fort Knox Artifacts, Scottsdale, AZ All items in this auction have been legally acquired, are legal to sell, and guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
