Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manabi Province, ca. 500 CE. The Jama Coaque culture named for the towns of Jama and Coaque of the Pacific coast of Ecuador is known for its pottery, especially human-shaped molded statues adorned with appliqués and painted with rich pigments. The artist of this piece ornamented the body with fanciful mantilla, a grand headdress, necklace, and pigments of red and gold. Dress and ornament were identifiers of clans and ethnic groups and markers of rank among many ancient American peoples. Information encoded in elements of clothing and jewelry would have been understood by the members of those groups. Figure is a large fragment that represents upper 2/3 of complete figure. Nice wooden stand. Measurements for figure itself (stand adds 1" to height). 5.00"H (12.70 H cm) Provenance: Ex-Moomaw private collection, Englewood, CO. Acquired from South America in 1980. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
