Description:

Jalisco Culture, West Coast Mexico, ca. 500 BCE - 500 CE. 2-hole ocarina in the shape of a mushroom, with 2 suspension holes. This was clearly used to connect to the spirit world during shamanic rituals in which hallucinogenic mushrooms were ingested. The power of the mushroom is emphasized in that it has a face, with the two note holes as eyes, and the airstream exit hole as a mouth. It is a tiny instrument, but it produces two very piercing, high-pitched tones. 1-3/4" H. Provenance: Ex-l. Kalina, ex-Andrade Collection, N.Y. The starting price is the lowest price at which the piece can sell.
