Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Inca, ca. 1500 CE. Impressive Inca textile, not only for its bright, vivid colors and tight weaving technique, but also for its composition and iconography. The ancient artisan organized the piece into rows of anthropomorphic figures, each depicted with an alter ego housed inside his body. These are perhaps shamans undergoing a transformation to an alternative identity. The columns of figures woven in fibers of many hues including chocolate brown, olive green, plum, yellow ochre, tan, blue, and cream are divided by an abstract, zigzag motif comprised of tiny squares of olive green, black and cream. The entire composition was woven against a rich, burgundy background. Mounted to dark linen. 17"L x 15"W
