Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Inca, ca. 1300 to 1500. An unusual blackware face vessel created by the Inca culture, depicting an expressive visage of a gentleman most likely chewing coca, with deeply set eyes, a toothy smile, and one protruding cheek, most likely containing a wad of coca. Most impressive is the subject's meticulously delineated plaited coiffure that is capped by an intricately patterned head covering and leads up to the neck and spout of the vessel. Covered with rootmarkings! Size: 6-7/8" x 5-1/2". Provenance: Ex-private Pavao collection, PA, acquired before 1980.
