A finely made Pre-Columbian Colima figure from ancient West Mexico, circa 200 BCE - 200 CE. Measuring approximately 10 ½" tall, this example was sensitively modeled by the confident hands of an accomplished ancient artisan of the highest skill level. The figure's gentle slopes and curves imply a lifelike sense of volume, with subtle features that are appealingly restrained and compelling. Figures such as these were made by the ancient inhabitants of the Colima and other nearby West Mexican regions specifically for the purpose of being interred with the deceased, placed alongside them in the deep shaft and chamber tombs for which the ancient cultures of that region are known. Some are thought to perhaps represent actual individuals, serving as three-dimensional, sculptural portraits of the deceased, loved-ones or important persons within their community. - Condition: Intact with only a minor chip to the tip of the figure's left foot and minor abrasions, weathering and wear overall. Heavy Manganese and other mineral deposits cover the surface, which are the result of millennia of burial. These surface deposits remain as evidence of the age and authenticity of this example. This piece could be further cleaned, if desired, but has been left in minimally cleaned condition to give the next collector the option of cleaning it further or leaving the surface in it's original state.
