Description:

Starts at $350 From ancient West Mexico, circa 200 B.C. - 200 A.D. Measures approximately 6-1/2" tall x about 5-1/2" wide. Colima blackware is rarer than the more commonly seen red and brown varieties. The rare and elegant form of this vessel is that of the heart of the Agave or Maguey plant, either in it's young state or after it's long pointed leaves have been cut and it's core/heart has been harvested. These plants were very important to the inhabitants of ancient West Mexican regions for the production of the fermented alcoholic beverage, Pulque. Production of Pulque brought power and prestige to those who controlled it. As such, the plants and the paraphernalia involved in the production of Pulque are common symbols of power and elite status in ancient West Mexican art. Because of the associated form of this vessel, it is likely that it had some practical or symbolic use in the production or consumption of Pulque, and may have implied prestige related to the person for whom it was made. Provenance: Former Lynn Langdon collection of West Mexican artifacts, collected personally by Langdon pre-1970. Authenticity Guaranteed The starting price is the price at which the piece can sell.
