Description:

Colima Culture, West Coast Mexico, ca. 200 BCE -300 CE. Composite flute that directs the air from the narrow mouthpiece to 4 chambers simultaneously with 10 notes. There is a small eagle head molded on the mouthpiece. These complex composite flutes are extremely rare and seem to be unique to West Mexico. They were made by attaching the flute chambers together and connecting them to a single mouthpiece so multiple notes could be played at the same time. The author has seen examples made with 2, 4 and 5 chambers. The longer chamber served as a drone. Provenance: Ex-L. Kalina Collection, ex-Kaplan Collection, Laguna Beach, CA. The starting price is the lowest price at which the piece can sell.
