Description:

Starts at $100 - Small olla-shaped vessel from ancient Panama, circa 600 - 800 CE. This Conte style example, most commonly referred to as Cocle, measures approximately 3 1/2" wide by about 3" tall, and exhibits polychrome decoration in black and purple against a cream colored slip. The form is aesthetically pleasing, tapering from the globular body toward a narrow opening at the top. The designs on the exterior are referred to by scholars as the "Y-Element" or "YC Scroll" motif, which are generally thought to suggest serpent or tail symbolism, possibly more broadly symbolic of the concept of a life-force. Provenance: Former private Florida, USA collection- acquired from a 1982 Sotheby Parke Bernet auction, part of lot #1446. Authenticity Guaranteed The starting price is the price at which the piece can sell.
